2Simple Französisch

by Ton Koenraad — last modified 23.06.2009 13:21

BBC bitesize activities for young kids

Bitesize activities from the BBC specifically for the KS1 (Key Stage 1) activities for children aged 5 to 7.

...[] The KS1 Bitesize area contains both Math and Literacy interactive activities. The Math section contains 12 different activities and the Literacy section has nine. Each activity has three levels of difficulty: Medium, Hard, and Really Hard.

The graphics and audio on these activities are very professional and all the activities were developed with interactive whiteboards in mind so they all work great with the SMART Board.

The great thing about these activities is that they can be viewed full-screen to help make the activities more engaging. In addition, each activity has a corresponding worksheet. Student feedback is also very stimulating. After students touch on an answer, the activity responds with some fun animation and let's them know if they are correct.

In the Kung-Fu Sentences activity the character does a spinning Kung-Fu move after students select an answer. If the student is correct, the Kung-Fu Master flips the correct answer into place with his stick.

Hope kids find this cool, as expected by the author of this blogpost at Teachers Love SMART Boards, and -even more important- that this feature will contribute to the effectiveness of the activity!

TeqSmart Templates

TeqSmart offers templates for use on Smart Boards

TeqSmart is a compagny that promotes the use of Smart Boards in Education. They also produce templates advertised as Learning Objects. According to the firm they ...[] are designed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the interactive whiteboard. Our current Learning Objects include more than twenty-five interactive maps, manipulatives, games and templates. Designed for teachers and students they are fun, easy to use, and simple enough to support any teaching style.

Learning Objects allow teachers and students to exchange ideas. They contain interactive information built in multiple layers that can be compared, contrasted and enhanced

So far I could find only one product 'the word bucket' that they advertise as cross-curriculum and that possibly could be of interest to language specialist (although the picture, IMO, suggests only a trivial contribution to the educational process...)

Magnetic Poetry for Kids

Site supporting playing with word chunks to create poetry, sentences and stories.

It's hard to keep up with all the people talking about The Magnetic Poetry for Kids website.

First of all, this is a very simple  concept. The site has a work area on the left side of the screen and a collection of words and/or phrases on the right-hand side. To use the program, students simply touch and drag the words into the work area. Words can be moved around with ease and placed anywhere the student or teacher desires.

Teachers could easily prepare the work area to contain words for the students to use to build sentences or they could allow students to explore the word collection and choose their own. This may help teachers to differentiate the learning process and control the difficulty of the task.

"Make a sentence that contains one noun, one verb, and one adjective."
"Build a 10 word sentence from the group of words in the word collection."
"Find all the nouns in the top part of the refrigerator.
"Find the verbs that describe what you can do on a rainy day."

The kids area contains four different kits that contain different word collections including a "First Words" kit and a "Story Maker" kit.

(Once again, a big thanks to Danny Nicholson and everyone else who has mentioned this site for getting the word out! )

New: Dutch community site on IWBs for language education

Several colleagues who visited my workshop on IWBs at the Levende Talen conference were interested in joining a CoP on the subject. I used the Xmas holidays to build the site, get some content together and invite people to register.

If you do not read Dutch, not to worry I will mirror stuff that has a potential international interst on this blog.
